Philosophy of Ministry

Heritage Bible Church seeks to exhibit before God and before all men a biblically balanced ministry which includes emphasis on evangelism, sound expositional teaching of the Word of God, and a strong stand on both personal and ecclesiastical separation. By God’s grace we covenant together before God to maintain diligently such a balance in ministry throughout its existence.

Concerning the Bible

We believe the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, to be inspired by God (2Tim. 3:16), and therefore, it is without error and is sufficient for life and godliness (2Pet. 1:3).  God’s Word has been preserved by the voluminous copies of ancient manuscripts and their subsequent translation into various languages.  Our intent is to interpret the Bible normally.  When interpreting individual passages of Scripture we strive to take into account the immediate context and the whole of the biblical record.  The Bible, not tradition or man’s ideas, is the foundation of our teaching, preaching and counseling.

Concerning the Church

We believe that the Church is a living organism with Christ as its Head.  This organism is made up of the individual members of the church, each one serving the body as each member ministers his or her spiritual gifts.  We believe that each church is an autonomous (self-ruling) entity under the ultimate rule of Jesus Christ.  Elders, with the pastor operating as a “first among equals”, function as under-shepherds ministering to the spiritual needs of the body, while deacons function as ministers of mercy and managers of the physical needs of the body.

Concerning Worship

We believe that worship is the proper response of a person to the revelation of God.  Therefore, worship should be taking place every day in the heart of every believer as each one encounters the revelation from God in creation, generally, and in His Word, specifically.  In our corporate gathering for worship, our goal is to so present the truth about God in order to give each one the opportunity to respond in praise, adoration, thanksgiving, confession and dedication.

Concerning Music

We believe that music is not a neutral tool but that music itself conveys a message.  As such, we seek to use music whose message does not contradict or distract from the truths that we sing.  We appreciate greatly the wonderful musical heritage that has been passed down throughout the history of the Church, yet we also seek to embrace new musical expressions that are both meaningful and substantive.

Concerning Evangelism

We believe that it is every Christian’s responsibility to be involved in the work of the Great Commission—to make and mature disciples of Jesus Christ.  The beginning of that commission is to introduce people to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  For that Gospel to be the complete and true Gospel, we believe that any Gospel presentation must include: 1) God – His holy character and purpose for mankind – to glorify God, 2) Man’s sin, the judgment of that sin by death in hell and his utter inability to save himself, 3) Jesus Christ – His person and work, including His vicarious death on the cross and victorious resurrection, 4) a call to repentance – turning away from sin, and 5) a call to faith – trusting and resting on the work of Jesus Christ alone.  In evangelism we seek to proclaim this Gospel through many different means, both verbal (preaching, sharing, etc.) and written (tracts, letters, etc).

Concerning Discipleship

We believe that discipleship is the completion of the Great Commission as described in Matthew 28:18-20.  A disciple is a learner and a follower of Jesus Christ.  A disciple-maker therefore is involved in teaching and leading.  Our job as a church is not just to “get people saved,” but rather to introduce people to Jesus Christ and then teach them and lead them to become faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

Concerning Fellowship

We believe that true Christian fellowship is more than just sharing coffee and cookies.  It is a sharing in Christ based upon our commonality in Christ.  Therefore, we sense fellowship is not based upon age, ethnicity, background, etc., we seek to engage in true spiritual fellowship across these artificial boundaries.
