Ministry Priorities
God-centered, God-honoring Corporate Worship
So much of what passes for “worship” today is really man-centered entertainment, dealing more with the raw emotions than with true spiritual affections. Our desire is not merely to be a reaction to such “worship,” but rather to point out our distinctness from it. Our worship is God-centered. This means that it is focused on God, for the glory of God and done in a way that is consistent with His holy character. It is corporate. This means that the primary activity in our worship service is congregational singing, rather than a service dominated by prepared music. All of this is done in order to awaken genuine spiritual affection for our great God whom we serve.
Practical Expository Preaching
The preaching at Heritage is primarily expository in nature as opposed to topical. We believe that there is a God and that this God has spoken to us through His inspired Word. Therefore, it is imperative for us to hear from God each Sunday, rather than simply from a man. In order to ensure this, we preach verse by verse through various books or sections within the Bible and seek to understand and proclaim what is there. At the same time, great care is taken to apply the truths of God’s Word to our modern situation to show that God’s Word is sufficient for faith and practice. Warm, Edifying Fellowship
We are a diverse group at Heritage Bible Church. There are young and old, new believers and seasoned saints, natives of Southern Cal and transplants from around the country. What unites us is our common bond in Jesus Christ. This is the foundation of all true, spiritual fellowship. This kind of fellowship is facilitated by a strengthening of our common beliefs through the faithful teaching of the Word of God and by sharing regularly with one another. This sharing takes place every Sunday before and after our services as well as the occasional potluck, but the primary scheduled opportunity for fellowship is our Wednesday evening prayer meeting. It is during this time that extra time is given so that each one can share with one another the things that God is doing in their lives. The goal of this is to edify (build up) one another as fellow members of the body of Christ.
Gospel-driven Community Outreach
Our goal in outreach to our community is not simply to meet physical needs. Of course, we would desire to meet those needs, but only as an opportunity to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our main task is to get the Gospel into our community. We strive to do this through individual means as each member evangelizes those in his own sphere of life. We also strive to do this corporately as we engage in group activities centered on the spreading of the good news of Jesus Christ. This takes place by means of mass tract distribution as well as maintaining a presence at community gatherings with the intent to tell others of Jesus Christ.
